The Crystallizer (2017)

The Crystallizer is an electroacoustic instrument which generates sound and light. The physical structure was inspired by intricate crystalline structures which illuminate colours when light is casted onto them.  The player is meant to interact with the instrument as if they are 'crystal gazing'; where one casts their focus on the object in order to transcend into a meditative state where they can see images predicting their future. 

 

The pyramid structure was design and built using laser cut acrylic plexi glass. The inner layer was also a pyramid made up of foam which housed the LED strips on each side. Copper mesh was attached to each side of the pyramid and was programmed to measure the capacitance between the object and the performer. Soft-pot potentiometers were placed on the sides of the crystal which measured the resistance between the performer's touch and the strip.
